The Shortest Day...and an early Merry Christmas to all...

and a blessed and joyous Solstice, when the light overcomes darkenss...

The Shortest Day

And so the Shortest Day came and the year died
And everywhere down the centuries of the snow-white world
Came people singing, dancing,
To drive the dark away.
They lighted candles in the winter trees;
They hung their homes with evergreen;
They burned beseeching fires all night long
To keep the year alive.
And when the new year's sunshine blazed awake
They shouted, revelling.
Through all the frosty ages you can hear them
Echoing behind us - listen!
All the long echoes, sing the same delight,
This Shortest Day,
As promise wakens in the sleeping land:
They carol, feast, give thanks,
And dearly love their friends,
And hope for peace.
And now so do we, here, now,
This year and every year.
Welcome Yule!

-Susan Cooper.

And happy anniversary to my dear friend Ailsa!

This so pretty. Thanks for sharing it. Kat, I just love your cabin in the woods. Or should I say your studio.
Thank you, glad you like!

Longest Day :)

So strange to me to hear about the shortest day - it's our longest day ... and also my husband's birthday. Enjoying our warmth and sunshine, sending some to you :)

Re: Longest Day :)

Well, happy birthday to your husband! I could use some sunshine, thank you!

Short Story Day

The shortest day of the year is also International Short Story Day. Proper observation involves reading a short story. Festive hats and drinks are optional but recommended.

Re: Short Story Day

Well thank you, Paul! I believe that's a marvelous recommendation! Now...which short stories to choose...
