Tip #90--on making your own travel kit!

Hi all!  I've been having problems with my email for a couple of months, so I wanted to put this my tips announcement newsletter here, too.  Sorry if you've already received it!

The tip this time is on creating your own mini-travel kit for watercolors--it's addictive!

You can find it on my website, as usual--that's HERE.

I've bookmarked several sites online that use different approaches, but we all seem to tweak the idea to fit what WE like.  As you'll read on Tip #90, I prefer larger pans and more mixing area plus room for the basics like pencils and erasers, but lots of folks like all the colors they can squeeze in.  It's up to you!

Here are just a few of my favorite idea starters online: http://artezan.blogspot.com/2007/04/home-made-watercolour-bijou-box.html and
here's one from Instructibles: http://www.instructables.com/id/Altoids-Tin-Pocket-Sized-Watercolor-Box/

My friend and fellow North Light author Nita Leland got in on the act, too--her version is here: http://nitaleland.blogspot.com/2006/11/make-mini-watercolor-travel-palette.html.

Try 'em out and see what works for you!  I'd love to see what you come up with...

WATERCOLOR BOXES AND PALETTES

We all explore new equipment--I use being a teacher as an excuse!

You can see my various watercolor boxes over the years and my experiments with making my own here:

MY INSPIRATION FOR MAKING a FANCIER WATERCOLOR BOX!

As I've mentioned here before, I was originally inspired to try the more involved method of making my little sketchbox by Dr. Sketch.  His Flickr set is here--and I know you'll be inspired too! http://www.flickr.com/photos/drsketch/sets/72157600044286742/

MY ART GALLERY BLOG's NEW FEATURE

I've had so many people ask how I do this or that, that I decided to add a new feature to my gallery blog, here: http://cathyjohnsonart.blogspot.com/

I did an informal poll on this post: http://cathyjohnsonart.blogspot.com/2009/06/gallery-blog-idea-tell-me-what-you.html
and the response was pretty amazing, in less than 24 hours.  I've had answers on the blog, on Facebook, and in my inbox, so I decided to DO it.

The plan is, when I put up a new painting or sketch, to do a mini-art tip there, too.  It's easier, on a blog!

It will be just a sentence or two explaining what I did and how...there's a sample of what I'm aiming for here:
http://cathyjohnsonart.blogspot.com/2009/06/waiting-for-first-snow.html

If I have a detail shot like this one, I'll add it; if not, I'll just tell what the technique was, how to do it, and why I decided to use it.

If you have any suggestions, just let me know!

ART CRAWL in EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, MO

Don't forget the Art Crawl on Friday, June 12!  If you're in the area, I'll be doing a demo at Olde English Garden Shoppe http://englishgardenshop.com/ at115 East Broadway (from 5 pm to 8 pm), and I'd be delighted to see you.
There will be wine, food, and live music again this time--including my good friend and neighbor Kevin Morgan, on flute here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BO7X9pf5IGA  so it should be a fun event!

Kevin and his talented wife Sonya are also my webmasters, at http://morgansites.com.  One of their newest efforts shows off our region
beautifully, and showcases some of their clients--including me!  You'll find it here: http://www.tasteofmissouri.com/

SKETCH CRAWL

As we usually try to schedule it (unless life intervenes!), our regular sketch crawl will be the day after Art Crawl, Saturday, June 13 at 1:00.  If you're interested, please write me at kate@cathyjohnson.info so I can put you on the mailing list for the sketchcrawl and get meeting place info to you.  Now that the weather is cooperating, we're branching out a bit!

MY ONLINE BOOKS & MORE STORE

http://astore.amazon.com/httpcathyjohi-20?_encoding=UTF8&node=11

I've found my online store is a great way to share product information and reviews...some of you may know about it already.  I've been updating the section above, on art supplies and materials, and discovered you can even get my favorite Derwent Blue Grey watercolor pencil open stock!  HAD to share!

I've revised a couple of existing reviews and added new things I haven't had a chance to review yet, but definitely recommend.

Oh, and as some of you already know--if you buy things through my store, or even through my link (it doesn't matter whether it's something I review or now, it could be a camera, a toaster oven, or a pair of jeans), I get a tiny bit of income.  Every little bit helps these days, so thank you if you decide to bookmark my site!  The store link itself is http://astore.amazon.com/httpcathyjohi-20

And y'know?  If you DON'T buy anything, my "Cathy Johnson's Books & More" is still a handy place to see what I've read or used myself--I don't review anything I'm not pretty pleased with!  (Sigh, except the darn ink pens I had to remove today...they turned out to be a disappointment after a few months.)

ARTISTS SKETCHBOOKS ONLINE

I've shared this wonderful resource before, but we've got a LOT of new members!  If you haven't seen it, be prepared to spend HOURS
here...sketchbooks old and new and from the Old Masters as well. http://www.gis.net/~scatt/sketchbook/links.html

I'm delighted to say my links are here, too!  Thank you, Scattergood

Our nature-sketching group blog is up to 33 correspondents now!  There have been some fascinating looks at nature all over the globe, and there will be more as folks have a bit more time to post. Check us out at http://naturesketchers.blogspot.com/

Enrique Flores is our newest addition--you may know him as 4ojos on Flickr, you've seen his work on Urban Sketchers at http://www.urbansketchers.com/ and you can browse through his terrific sketchbooks on YouTube, here:

Welcome, Enrique!

VICKIE HENDERSON'S NATURE BLOG

One of our regulars, Vickie Henderson, has a blog I know you'll enjoy--I sure do.  She takes the most amazing photos, in addition to her sketches and paintings.  Don't miss it!  http://vickiehenderson.blogspot.com/

The revision of Watercolor Tricks and Techniques is really coming along! I just sent off Part 2's revisions and additions, with only one more section to go!

I'm also deep in the middle of our Watercolor Pencil Workshop online, now, so I apologize for being a bit late with this.  I've got a terrific bunch of students who ask really good questions...they keep me hopping!

And that said...back to work for me!
