Starving Artists in the Kitchen--opening soon!

starving artists 2, originally uploaded by Cathy (Kate) Johnson.

I've been playing with the logo/header for the new cooking project and delighted by the response on my Flickr and here. Everybody loves a food blog, it seems!

We still haven't settled on where or how, but getting a huge backlog of WHAT...we just keep cooking and experimenting!  (J's in the kitchen making spiced rum applesauce, even as we speak!  Smells heavenly...)

On the blog, we'll be concentrating a lot on food that's:

* Frugal
* Healthful
* Quick and easy

and MOST important--

* DELICIOUS!

We like food! We're adventurous, too, so you may see some fairly exotic fare here...(or there, wherever we end up.)

My eldest godchild, professional photographer Ann Brown, shot this photo of us a couple of years ago--we both loved it for those silly grins! (Here's her website-- http://annbrownphotography.com --if you're anywhere near KC, MO and you need some wonderful photos done, check her out!) j. suggested this version of the chef hats, and I incorporated some of our art with Photoshop--that's his Cholula bottle!

Ann's a good cook, too, and when I asked if I could use the photo for our logo, she told me SURE, as long as she can contribute the occasiional recipe! Guest chefs sounds like a great idea, to me.

Yes, I've got lots of other projects, what with the book, teaching, the rehab house and life in general, but this is something (else) fun that we can do together!

And hey, ya gotta eat!

We will! I love them too. At the moment, I'm just considering a blog site that would allow us to link to cookbooks, diet books and such on Amazon, as well as javascripts. I don't think LJ does that, at least they didn't used to. I'd like to make it as useful as possible...
fast, easy, fairly cheap, and if one uses low fat meat, healthy: from the "emergency food department" i present

Glop!

1 pound of burger-- turkey, hamburger, ground round, etc.
1 can of baked beans--your choice
1 can of corn, drained (or leftover frozen, etc.]
approx 1/4 to 1/2 cup catsup or barbecue sauce

brown meat in frying pan, using seasonings you like, onion, too, a bit of garlic. dump in that can of beans after you drain any grease from the meat, and add the corn. heat gently through, and add catsup or sauce as desired. simmer, and serve up with salad, a bit of cornbread, and beverage of choice.

this was the fastest supper in the retinue of the "desperate full time working mom" file. we still serve it up when we are camping.

now i'm among the first to contribute, even if it is a bit suspect....
Oooh, thanks for sharing, girlfriend!
By the way, I remember cooking that on camping trips, too! SO easy over the fire, and filling, too!
Great idea! I'm looking forward to it.
Thanks, me too. Going to be fun!

Loved your blog and a late thank you

Hi Kate, I loved reading your entire blog and really liked reading about the Fried Green Tomatoes--always remembered them from Fanny Flagg's great book and the movie (both are favorites)...Also, I am so negligent in thanking you for the two wonderful CD's that I ordered...I haven't had much time to work with them, but will and they look super! Thank you for all that you do for the edm group! Good luck on your new endeavors! Susan

Re: Loved your blog and a late thank you

Hi Susan! Glad you're enjoying the blog, AND the CDs! The nice thing about them is that you can use them any time, whenever its convenient for you.

And thanks for the kind words and good wishes!
