Gouache

One of my students asked about using gouache today, so I added more samples to my Flickr gouache album, here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/25146557@N00/sets/72057594048423937/

It's really a fascinating change from watercolor--still water-based, still lift-able and malleable, but much more opaque so you paint mostly dark to light instead of light to dark as you usually do with watercolor.

Painting on toned paper--even black, as I did here in this illustration of State Flowers I did for Country Living Magazine a few years back--really makes the color pop.

You can add a lot of lovely detail with gouache, too...I'm tempted to paint Oliver, my new longhaired champagne colored cat.

The wreath sat in my returned illustrations box for years, till I finally decided to USE it...so it's a clock, here:

and notecards here: http://www.cafepress.com/cathy_johnson.20083895

and even a t-shirt, here: http://www.cafepress.com/cathy_johnson.21263579

(Can you tell I really like gouache, and flowers?)

It's really a fascinating change from watercolor--still water-based, still lift-able and malleable, but much more opaque so you paint mostly dark to light instead of light to dark as you usually do with watercolor. It can be subtle or as bold as the flowers on this wreath...

Hi Miss Lin! I suspect you'd get pretty bored on a subject like this, it took FOREVER. But thank you, sweet thing...
Wow, I never even thought to use gouache on black paper before. You really show the amazing difference it makes with the opaque colors. I'm going to have to try it now. The wreath is especially crisp and eyecatching with the dark background!
Did you check out the Flickr set? I've got a couple of botanicals on black that I just love!
And by the way, what a gorgeous icon!
that icon is one of her pyrography things...she burns on paper like some folks sketch.
Oh WOW. It's wonderful. I'd love to see a larger version or some other work!
i love it--minnesota, right at 5 p.m. and i love the idea of gouache on the dark paper--i'm with shigella. it looks like fun. right after i clean up after the latest flood in the basement...
Oooooooh NOOOOO!! Ew! (Joseph thinks he wants to use the basement to store things when he moves here...I carefully keep it empty of anything that matters because of the flood problem! I have a sump pump, but if the electricity goes out...)

Sorry, girl...I'd say I wish I could help you, but I'll never lie to you. Ewwwwwwwwwww, flood mess!! *G*
let him store away--just be certain that the storage shelves begin above the high water mark, and that your plastic storage bins don't have a crack in the bottom...(the voice of experience...)
Excellent advice...he told me they'd just bob on the water like little boats. One can only hope.*G*
